Volunteer in South Africa

A country of extraordinary  beauty, and adventure, South Africa is the third most biologically diverse country in the world. From sophisticated Capetown to the vast open country of the veldt, this is a country waiting for exploration.

A country whose population was once divided and isolated from the rest of the world  during the period of Apartheid, is now standing side by side. With its varied cultures, politics, wildlife and landscape, see up close how this nation has learned to travel from the discrimination of the past towards  progress and a brighter future  to become the economic hub of Africa.

Be part of this exciting change, by being part of the development process through participation in our Volunteer in South Africa programme.

Projects

The projects, which we have designated for our programme, have been carefully selected by SASTS our local partner in South Africa. The work could range from teaching in a township school to environmental development, from placement in a wildlife reserve to coaching a local village football team.

Other projects where volunteers have contributed include archaeological excavation, Aids projects, urban micro farming, community conservation and aid shelters for women. The projects tend to last about two months and you will work approx. 35-40 hours a week.

Free time may be at weekends or during the week according to the needs of the project. Each project will have a local co-ordinator with whom you can negotiate time for travelling and other details.

Housing

Accommodation is provided locally usually with local families although sometimes on the project site with the other volunteers. The locations depend on whether it is an urban or rural project. Food  is also provided for volunteers.

Introduction to South Africa with SASTS

Our partners in South  Africa ensure that not only will you settle into your new life but you will also see some of the country and city you are visiting and get some insights into the culture to help prepare you for your volunteer project.

The week before you start working on your project you will meet the other international volunteers and take tours of the Townships, of Table Mountain wildlife parks and maybe even do a wine tour! During this introductory immersion week in Capetown, you will stay in the Ashanti Lodge.

SASTS, established more than thirty years ago, supports the promotion of youth mobility and internationalisation through a wide range of work, volunteer and educational exchanges and offers a wide range of services to participants in South Africa.
